Buying a Used John Deere Tractor: A Dealer-Backed Checklist

What to check before you buy, and how a dealer purchase differs from private or auction.

Cornthwaite Group, authorised John Deere dealer: Nantwich, Bispham Green, Kendal, Carlisle and Dumfries.

Know the series first

  • John Deere tractors range from compact utility tractors to high-horsepower row-crop models. Decide the horsepower, linkage and hydraulic capacity your work actually needs before you look at individual machines.
  • Check the official model specifications on John Deere UK and compare them with the machine in front of you.
  • Note the exact model, serial number and year so the dealer can check its history.

Hours and service history

  • Ask for the hour-meter reading and compare it with the tractor's age and condition. Wear on pedals, seat and steering should match the hours.
  • Ask for service records: oil and filter changes, hydraulic and transmission oil, and any major repairs.
  • A dealer can check servicing done in its own workshops. Cornthwaite has 50+ John Deere-trained service technicians.

Walk-round inspection checklist

  • Engine: cold start, smoke, unusual noises, leaks
  • Transmission: smooth engagement in every range, no slipping
  • Hydraulics: lift and hold under load, spool valves, hoses and couplings
  • PTO: engages and runs smoothly at each speed
  • Linkage and drawbar: wear in pins and bushes
  • Tyres: tread depth, cracking, matching sizes
  • Cab: electrics, displays, air conditioning, glass
  • Front loader (if fitted): brackets, pins, cracks

Specially selected used tractors come with:

  • 6 month / 500 hour warranty
  • 60 point check
  • Full valet

Ask the depot which machines in stock are Premium Used and what the warranty covers.

Finance options

The dealer's finance page lists three main routes. Ask the Retail Finance team for quotes and terms:

  • Hire purchase: pay a deposit up front, spread the rest, and own the machine after the final payment.
  • Finance lease: fixed payments over a primary lease period.
  • Operating lease / contract hire.

Lifting and safety checks

  • If a tractor or loader will be used for lifting at work, check its inspection status. HSE guidance on LOLER explains the rules.
  • Cornthwaite offers LOLER inspections, NSTS sprayer testing and end-of-warranty inspections.
